Make it or Break it: IG Basics You’re Likely Missing

Hello Amazing Entrepreneurs! The following tips are from the lovely & intelligent Meta Exec, Ms Shelton. She has brought our customers great success in the Instagram Business world.

Use these tips on bio and account optimization to help reach your target audience, capture their attention & make them lifelong customers.

Bio Optimization:

  • Starting you off with this HOT TIP: Upload a screenshot of your IG Bio into Google Gemini AI & ask it to review & advise best SEO keywords for the industry you’re in & your target audience. Your Instagram bio can make or break you, so make it unforgettable by showcasing your expertise and authority. Make people hit that follow button!
  • Each line has a purpose. Top Name line – who you are & what service you provide, below this is your category (see next bullet point on how to add a category), then your bio. For your bio, 1st line is who you are helping, be hyper-specific (you always want your audience to feel you are speaking directly to them), 2nd line is how you help your target audience, 3rd line is your experience and 4th line is your CTA (call to action). Be sure to have your website linked as well.
  • Display your category on your profile…doing this before would cause the last sentence of your bio to be hidden, but IG changed it, so it is A-OK to add it. GO to edit profile, Category, then turn the toggle on for display on profile.
  • Your profile picture should be unique & reflect your brand’s personality. People prefer real images, so try not to do an AI generated image. You can also do a business logo, this adds a very professional element. Canva is a great tool for this.
  • Avoid the bot look – maintain a healthy ratio of followers to following to appear authentic and trustworthy. In other words, have more followers than you are following.

Account Optimization: Each one of these is very important for your account to reach your desired audience

Leverage Instagram’s search & give the algorithm proper signals by searching for keywords your target audience would be using – think in more general terms as they most likely won’t know your specific industry terms. There are two things you can do with this- one is you can see what your target audience is viewing when they search, you will see what is popular and what captures their attention (by how many likes, comments & views). Be sure to click on the Reels section at the top right, as this is the most common way your audience will discover you. The second way you can use IG’s search to your advantage is include those specific SEO keywords in your posts to help your reels/static posts reach. If you want to know the specific steps to this, you can find them in this guide.

Identify and follow well-established (high follower) accounts whose audience you want to emulate in your niche. This will signal to the algorithm who you want your content sent to. Your inbound content (explore page, followers, certain settings, etc) is just as important as your outbound content (your reels, posts and stories). Aligning everything in the proper manner will get you more followers and increase your visibility.

Don’t rush to follow, like, or comment too quickly. Excessive activity can trigger Instagram’s spam filters and lead to restrictions. Engage with other accounts gradually throughout the day to avoid appearing suspicious. Consistent, moderate activity is key.

Besides following larger accounts whose audience you want, follow smaller accounts as well. Do this by searching for keywords your audience would use (remember broader, general terms are best), for example “make money on Instagram” if you’re a digital marketer or “custom made products” for Etsy entrepreneurs. So yes you may be following competitors, but this helps aligns your account with them and signals the machine learning models (algorithm) who your account is and who to send your content to. Be sure to only follow 5-10 accounts at a time so it doesn’t look like bot activity.

Posting – consistency and quality over quantity. If you can produce high quality posts once a day, that is amazing but it won’t hurt your account if you do less than that. We have seen low posting accounts outpace high posting accounts with follower count growth (as long as you’re consistent and engaging daily in other ways).

Explore page – your explore page should be filled with everything that your account aligns with. For example, if you’re in the fitness industry, you don’t want hair and make up tutorials in your explore page. You should be seeing everything related to fitness. Use your personal account for those other searches. Keeping this page aligned with your account signals to the learning models what your account is about and in turn, effectively pushes your content to the right audience.
